italki Review: What You Are Actually Buying

What italki is, and what it is not

A marketplace connecting learners with individual language teachers for one-to-one video lessons. There is no curriculum, no cohort and no schedule imposed on you. You search, filter, watch introduction videos, book a trial lesson with somebody who looks right, and continue if it worked. That is the entire product, and it explains both the strengths and the failure mode: the ceiling is very high because you can find an excellent teacher for the price of a takeaway, and nothing at all happens in weeks when you do not book.

It is not a course, not an app that teaches you, and not a service with one quality standard. Two learners on italki can have completely different experiences at the same price, because they hired different people.

The two teacher types, and why the difference matters

italki runs two profile types and an applicant must choose one. The distinction is about documented credentials, and it is written plainly in the help centre.

Read that price row carefully, because it is the most useful line on this page. A community tutor can legitimately charge the same 120 dollars an hour as a credentialed teacher. Price is not a proxy for qualification here, and the tier badge is. If you are a beginner who needs somebody to structure the learning, that argues for a professional teacher. If you already know what you need and want somebody to talk to, a community tutor at the bottom of the range is the best value in this entire category.

What it costs

Every teacher prices themselves, so the honest answer is a range rather than a number. italki's own tutor pages state that English tutors cost "between 4 to 60 dollars per hour, depending on the tutor's experience and lesson format", that a 30-minute lesson "typically costs between 4 and 10 dollars", and that professional teachers commonly sit in an 18 to 32 dollars per hour band. Trial lessons are offered by most teachers at a reduced price; we saw examples listed at 10 and 25 dollars.

Packages, where you buy several lessons with the same teacher at once, carry a discount. They also carry an expiry, which is covered below and is the reason we would not buy a large package before you are sure about the teacher.

The credit system, which is the part that catches people

This is the mechanic to understand before your first payment, and it is the reason we would call italki cheap rather than risk-free.

• Money becomes credit. You buy italki Credits, then spend credits on lessons. The payment terms state: "No refunds will be given for italki Credits purchased."
• Cancelled lessons refund as credit, not cash. A cancelled lesson request is returned "in the form of italki credits" to your student wallet.
• Credits expire on inactivity. If an account has been inactive for more than twelve months, the credits expire. They can be reactivated once if they have been expired for less than twelve months, and are then valid for a further twelve months.
• Packages expire in six months. All lessons in a package must be completed within six months of purchase. If a package expires, the lessons you did take are settled at the single-lesson price and whatever remains returns to your wallet as credits.

What we would do about that: top up for the lessons you have actually scheduled rather than loading the wallet for a volume discount, and skip large packages until a teacher has proven themselves over several lessons. The system is not unfair, but it is designed so that money entering the platform stays in the platform.

The protection that exists, and its limits

italki does offer a real safety net, but it is narrower than people assume, so here it is exactly. The 100% Satisfaction Guarantee applies to trial lessons and can be used up to two times. It covers two situations: the teacher did not show up, or the teacher "didn't meet your expectations for the class". To use it you contact customer success within 48 hours after the trial lesson time has passed, with the lesson ID and your reasons. Two exclusions matter: requests made after the lesson is marked complete are not processed, and trials bought with vouchers are not eligible.

Outside that window, a problem with a lesson goes through the incomplete-lesson process instead. If a request and the proposed solution are declined twice, it becomes a dispute, and italki states that support "will settle the italki credits based on the materials submitted in the system within 3 days from the date of the dispute" and that "all italki decisions are final". The company advises talking to the teacher first, which is genuinely good advice: most lesson problems are scheduling or expectation mismatches.

Do not raise a card chargeback. It is the instinctive move when a platform holds your money, and on marketplaces it typically gets the account frozen, which loses you both the disputed lesson and the credits sitting in your wallet. Use the platform's own dispute route, keep the messages in the italki system where support can read them, and claim the trial guarantee inside 48 hours when it applies.

Is italki legit?

Yes, in the sense the question is usually asked: it is a long-established marketplace with published policies, a documented dispute process and an enormous public review record. On Trustpilot it showed 4.3 out of 5 from 14,760 reviews on July 23, 2026, on a profile claimed back in January 2015. That rating is Trustpilot's, attributed here rather than adopted as ours, and the profile carries Trustpilot's own label noting the company has a paid Trustpilot subscription, which is common for businesses on the platform and says nothing about the reviews themselves.

The more useful caution is structural rather than moral. On a marketplace, quality is a property of the person you booked, not of the brand, so a bad first lesson tells you about that teacher and not much else. Book trials with two or three candidates before settling, and read the reviews on the individual teacher's profile rather than the platform's aggregate.

Using italki for a child

It works, with an adult in the loop, and italki says as much in its own help centre rather than leaving parents to guess. The platform states that "most of the users on italki are adults" and asks that parents create accounts on behalf of their children and manage the account, the lessons and the communication with teachers. It also warns that "not all teachers are prepared to teach kids" and points to the Kids category filter, suggests messaging a teacher first with the child's level and needs, and tells parents to supervise the child during lessons because a child's access to the internet and content needs monitoring.

That is the right framing and we would not soften it. You are hiring a private tutor from an open marketplace, which is a normal thing to do and a different thing from handing a child a learning app. Sit in on the first sessions, use the category filter, and prefer a professional teacher with a kids specialisation over the cheapest available slot.

Who should use it

Use it if: you can already form basic sentences and need somebody to hear you speak, your availability moves around week to week, you are preparing for an exam or an interview, or you want a specific accent or dialect that structured courses do not offer. Look elsewhere if: you need a syllabus and a fixed timetable to keep going, in which case scheduled classes are the better shape, or you are at the absolute beginning and would rather build a first few hundred words for free before paying anyone. How we would start, concretely

1. Top up only what you need for two or three trial lessons. Do not fund the wallet for a discount yet.
2. Book trials with two or three teachers, one professional and one community tutor, and notice which one you would happily meet again next week.
3. If a trial goes badly, claim the guarantee inside 48 hours and before the lesson is marked complete. That window is short and it is the only cash-like protection you get.
4. Only then consider a package, and size it so you can finish it inside six months.
