Two things decide whether it is a good buy for you. Set expectations at vocabulary and habit rather than fluency, because no app hears your accent the way a teacher does. And understand the billing before you start: the terms say amounts are non-refundable unless stated otherwise, and the 14-day cooling-off right applies only to subscribers in the UK and EU. What Mondly actually teaches
Short daily lessons built around vocabulary, phrases and set conversations, with quizzes, weekly and monthly challenges and vocabulary review. The company's own framing is 41 languages, "more than 1000 language combinations", 50 topics for common situations and 41 conversations. Free covers daily lessons, challenges, lesson access and vocabulary review. Premium adds conversation practice with the app's chatbot, more than 50 pronunciation-focused lessons, grammar guides and conjugation tables, hands-free learning, Mondly Kids and augmented-reality lessons.
The native-language point is the one worth paying attention to. Most apps assume you speak English and teach everything through it. If your first language is Turkish, Polish, Korean or Portuguese, being taught from that language instead removes a translation step that quietly slows everything down. That is a real differentiator and it is the reason we would recommend Mondly ahead of better-known apps in exactly those cases.
What we will not tell you is that the conversation feature is an AI tutor in the sense people now expect. Mondly calls it conversation practice, and practice is the right word: you are working through prepared exchanges, not improvising with something that understands you. Judge it as structured speaking drills.
What it costs, and why the answer is awkward
Mondly does not publish a price on its own public pages. There is no pricing page; the figure appears once you are inside a purchase flow, and it varies by region, platform and whatever promotion is running. That is why we do not print a single headline number, and why every dollar figure you see quoted around the web should be treated with suspicion: most of it comes from deal sites rather than the company.
What we can quote is the store, because Apple publishes the in-app purchase list. On the US App Store listing, verified July 23, 2026, the app is published by ATi Studios, rated 4.7 out of 5 from 33,000 ratings, and the in-app purchase panel showed:

A lifetime membership also exists: the subscription terms refer to a subscription being "perpetual, if you have purchased a lifetime membership". No public price for it is published, and it did not appear in Apple's in-app purchase list, which suggests it is sold through the web checkout. If a lifetime offer is what you want, judge the number you are actually shown.
The refund right depends on where you live
This is the section we would want a friend to read first, because it is the part that generates the complaints.
- The default is no refund. The subscription terms state: "All amounts are non-refundable unless otherwise stated in these Subscription Terms."
- The cooling-off right is regional. Mondly grants a 14-day cooling-off period to subscribers in the UK and EU, running from the start of the subscription, from the end of a free or discounted trial, and from each automatic renewal. If you are buying from the US, that window is not offered to you.
- Store purchases are the store's problem. If you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play, Mondly states it "cannot cancel and/or refund Subscriptions on your behalf" and directs you to the store.
- Trials convert automatically. The terms describe a one-week App Free Trial, after which the subscription continues and renews each month until auto-renew is turned off in the relevant app store.
The practical consequence: decide what you want before you start a trial, and buy that. Starting a trial "to look around" is how people end up with a charge they did not plan, and the recent public complaints are dominated by exactly that sequence rather than by anything about the lessons.
Why the ratings look like two different products
Checked on the same day, July 23, 2026: the US App Store listing showed 4.7 out of 5 from 33,000 ratings, and Trustpilot showed 2.6 out of 5 from 779 reviews on a profile claimed in February 2021. Both figures belong to their platforms and are quoted here rather than adopted as our rating.
That gap is not mysterious once you see what each population is doing. People rate an app in the App Store while using it, usually prompted inside a lesson, and they are rating the lessons. People go to Trustpilot after something went wrong with money, and the recent reviews there are dominated by billing after a trial rather than by the teaching. Read the two together and the honest summary is: the product is well liked and the purchase experience is where the friction lives, which is exactly what the refund section above predicts.
One more piece of context worth having: the brand presents itself as "Mondly by Pearson", while the binding subscription terms are with ATI Studios A.P.P.S. S.R.L., a Romanian company, and the App Store publisher is ATi Studios. That is normal after an acquisition and it is not a red flag; it does mean the entity you are contracting with is not the one on the marketing.
